A glabrous shrub or small tree with smooth, gray bark; stipules distinct, long-cuspidate, coriaceous, finally deciduous; leaves short-petiolate, coriaceous, oblong to oval or oblong-obovate, 6-18 cm long, usually abruptly short-acuminate, acute at the base; inflorescences terminal and axillary, laxly cymose-paniculate,- often few-flowered but also with numerous flowers; calyx truncate; corolla white, the tube about 15 mm long, the lobes 12 mm long; fruit black at maturity, broader than high, about 1 cm in diameter.

The flowers are fragrant.
